Dr. Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman

Dr. Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman is a senior critical care physician, academic and clinical leader with more than 16 years of experience in intensive care medicine and anaesthesiology. He currently serves as Senior Consultant and Head of Intensive Care Medicine at MH Samorita Hospital & Medical College, providing consultant-led care for critically ill medical and surgical patients while overseeing multidisciplinary clinical services, medical education and quality-improvement initiatives.
Dr. Ashrafuzzaman holds an MD in Critical Care Medicine from Bangladesh Medical University, formerly Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, as well as a Diploma in Anaesthesiology and an MBBS from Mymensingh Medical College. He has completed Part-I of the European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine (EDIC) and successfully passed the Department of Health Abu Dhabi Critical Care Medicine licensing assessment at consultant level.
His clinical practice encompasses advanced mechanical ventilation, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis and septic shock, multiorgan failure, acute kidney injury and continuous renal replacement therapy, neurocritical care, advanced haemodynamic management, difficult airway management and transplant-related critical care. He has extensive experience in point-of-care ultrasonography and critical care echocardiography, together with a substantial record of complex bedside procedures, including airway management, central venous and dialysis catheter placement, arterial cannulation, chest drainage and percutaneous tracheostomy.
Before assuming his current leadership role, Dr. Md. Ashrafuzzaman held the position of Associate Professor and Head of Critical Care Medicine at Bangladesh Medical College, Dhaka where he led a 10 bed multidisciplinary ICU to provide critical care to the ICU patients. Before that, Dr. Md. Ashrafuzzaman held senior clinical and academic appointments at Bangladesh Medical University, the leading national tertiary referral and teaching centre. During his 15-year tenure there, he served as an Assistant Professor in the Intensive Care Unit division and also served as ICU Coordinator for Bangladesh’s first successful cadaveric organ-donation and transplantation programme—an important milestone in the country’s transplant services. He has also supervised postgraduate residents and trainees, contributed to institutional protocols and clinical governance, and participated actively in morbidity and mortality reviews, patient-safety programmes and intensive care service development.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr. Ashrafuzzaman is actively engaged in research and postgraduate medical education. He has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed publications addressing antimicrobial resistance, sepsis, mechanical ventilation, neurocritical care, COVID-19 outcomes and organ transplantation. His work has been presented at regional and international critical care forums across Europe and Asia.
